When most people build a house, they dream of a house that will last a lifetime - a house built on a strong foundation, with sturdy walls to weather the storms to come. But sadly, in reality, many homes built on good intentions have turned brick and mortar into fragile glass. Sometimes life doesn't turn out the way we plan, and we find ourselves living in a glass house.
In the midst of the difficulties we all face in our families, our troubles can be compounded by the scrutiny of others. It is easy to look at someone else's home situation and respond with quick criticism. But all of our homes have problems at one time or another. And so, it is good to remember the saying, "People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones." As the Body of Christ, we should never pick up stones of condemnation. We are called to emulate the grace of God that is available for every house—especially for glass houses.
The Traditional Home
Building a godly home means parents must show their kids that Christianity is not simply an activity on Sundays; it's a lifestyle. Commit to a consistent time for family devotions. Find a Christ - centered church that preaches the Word of God. Find ways to minister together as a family in your local church or your community. Make ministry fun and remember that your kids are watching you!
Parents, also remember to nurture the love in your marriage. A strong marriage is an invaluable gift to your children. It's important to enter into marriage carefully, watch over it prayerfully, and always ask for help when you need it.
The Single Parent Home
If you are a single parent, you know the incredible pressures of raising a family while working to provide for them. You know what it's like to put the needs of your children before your own personal needs. Many single parents experience unbelievable fatigue, frustration, and loneliness. But God is there to meet the needs of the single parent. He has not forgotten you and He wants to fill your home with His peace.
If you are feeling alone or abandoned, meditate on the truth that God will never leave you. Remember when you feel discouraged, God has not given up on you. His Word has hope, whether you are longing for companionship, provision, or even forgiveness.
The Blended Family
If your family has merged with another family through remarriage, there are unique challenges you face everyday. Blame, bitterness, and jealousy are familiar giants.
One thing you can do is communicate the difficulties of the past and present with each other. Learn how to talk with your spouse and your children about the losses you have experienced and the lessons you have learned. Discuss your new expectations for the family, making sure they are realistic.
As you commit yourself to God and to each other as a family, don't forget to keep a sense of humor. Laughter is critical to survival and enjoyment. Relax and enjoy activities as a family. Develop trust with one another and most importantly, trust God to build a strong home.
Stained Glass Windows
If your glass house has been shattered in the past, Jesus can take those broken pieces of glass and form them into something beautiful, like a carefully crafted stained glass window. As you submit to God, He will illuminate your life so brightly that the world will see the transforming power of His grace. Every home has a place in the beautiful stained glass mosaic of God's grace and is a part of a greater family that has been lovingly crafted by our Father's hand.
